The last member to be jailed out of an eight-member human trafficking gang has been jailed for two years and nine months by Lewes Crown Court.

Local publisher the Argus online reports that 37-year-old Attila Kolompar helped traffic more than 50 woman into the UK from Hungary – and set up brothels on the campus of Sussex University in Brighton and Eastbourne.

Kolompar comes from an area of Hungary near the border of Romania, which the court heard is “deprived”.

His role in the gang was to recruit women in Hungary and fly them to the UK to work in hotels and brothels. In the UK he transported the women to their places of work.

In just one month, however, Kolompar sent £10,757 back to bank accounts in Hungary.

However, one 17-year-old girl trafficked was barred from entering Britain because she was a minor.

He avoided the case going to trial by pleading guilty to conspiracy to traffic women into the UK for sexual exploitation.

After the hearing, David Fairclough from the Home Office Immigration Enforcement Criminal Investigations team said:

Kolompar took advantage of these vulnerable young women and controlled them mentally, physically and financially.
“They were coming to the UK in the hope of improving their lives, but were exploited so that Kolompar and his associates could run their despicable criminal network.”
The other members of the gang have already been sentenced.
