It is reported that 34 illegal immigrants who entered the UK in a shipping container have applied for asylum in Britain.

The Mirror reports the asylum seekers – all Afghan Sikhs – survived in the container without water and in freezing temperatures for 18 hours. However, one man died during the crossing from Belgium to the UK – 40-year-old Meet Singh Kapoor died on the way to Britain. It is thought he and his family were fleeing moneylenders in Afghanistan.

A total of 15 children were among the group of 35 who set off from Belgium on a P&O freight ferry in August. Some of the migrants already have family in the UK who took them in after the container was opened at Tilbury Docks in Essex after banging and shouting was heard coming from inside it.

Home Office Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said:
“Following the tragic incident at Tilbury, thirty-four individuals have claimed asylum and their cases are currently being considered.

“The UK has a proud history of granting asylum to those who need our protection and every claim will be considered on its individual merits.”

Three men have been charged with people smuggling in connection with the Afghan migrants.

Immigration Minister James Brokenshire responded to a rise in net migration figures released last week, saying the increase was “disappointing”.

Net migration in the year 2013-2014 rose to 260,000 from 242,000 the previous year. The majority of immigrants new to the UK came from outside the EU – although higher numbers of people have come from the EU to work and settle in Britain this year.
