Strathclyde University launches Asylum Seeker Scholarships (10 October 2014)

A Scottish University is offering three annual bursaries to asylum seekers to enable them to study for a degree.
The Herald reports that the University of Strathclyde is making available Asylum Seeker Scholarships to cover tuition fees and provide £2,000 to help students with day-to-day living expenses.
The scheme has been developed in association with the Scottish Refugee Council and the Students’ Association – young adult asylum seekers are not usually eligible for funding for higher education and have to wait for a Home Office decision before embarking on a course of study in the UK.
The scheme will apply to both undergraduates and postgraduate students – and every year three bursaries will be made available to young asylum seekers.
Strathclyde University’s director of student experience Dr Veena O’Halloran said that the university had a long history of “breaking down barriers to education”.
“Over the last year, we have pioneered a range of innovative approaches to widen participation,” she told The Herald.
Asylum seeker Angeline Mwafulirwa, 39, is a mother-of-three from Malawi who refused to board a plane for deportation from the UK in 2012. After being returned to a detention centre, she is now studying for a postgraduate degree in law. She hopes her law qualification will help other asylum seekers facing human rights issues and deportation from the UK.
Mrs Mwafulirwa’s application for asylum in the UK is still awaiting a Home Office decision.
