Duncan Lewis, Immigration Solicitors, Police continue questioning migrants found in container at Tilbury

Police are continuing to question migrants who survived a perilous trip to the UK sealed in a container loaded onto a lorry bound for Tilbury in Essex from the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium.

It is now known that 34 migrants survived the crossing from Zeebrugge and one man in his 40s died. The migrants are thought to have 13 children below the age of 12 with them and all are Sikhs fleeing Afghanistan.

Police are questioning the adults among the group – who have been released from hospital – about how they came to be transported in the container, to ascertain whether they have been trafficked, or had arranged to come to the UK to claim asylum or as economic migrants.

Belgian police are examining CCTV footage of the docks at Zeebrugge to try and pinpoint when the container arrived at the port and when it was loaded onto the lorry for the crossing.

The migrants were treated for dehydration at hospitals in Essex before being released for police questioning.

Police are also investigating the death of the man who did not survive the journey to establish when he died.

The migrants were discovered after they began banging and shouting to be let out of the container when the lorry arrived at Tilbury docks on board a P&O ferry.

Other containers on the lorry have been searched but no other illegal immigrants have been found.
