An 18-year-old woman underwent surgery at Bradford Royal Infirmary after being mauled by a dog while she was house sitting.

Local publisher the Telegraph and Argus reports that the victim was house sitting at an address in Wyke when the dog – reported to be a Doberman – attacked her. She sustained facial injuries and underwent surgery.

The incident happened on Monday 22 December and was reported to police. However, West Yorkshire Police said the unnamed woman had decided not to make a formal complaint about the incident.

The law on dog attacks on private property was changed in the UK in 2014 to enable prosecutions to be brought against dog owners whose dogs injured others in homes and on private land.

A change in the law was called for after several high profile cases involving dogs attacking and killing people in homes and on private land – including the case of 14-year-old Jade Lomas-Anderson from Wigan in Lancashire, who was mauled to death by a pack of five dogs at a friend’s house in 2013.

The law states that it is illegal to allow a dog to be dangerously out-of-control in a public place, or in a private place such as a neighbour’s house or garden, or in the owner’s home.

A dog is considered to be dangerously out-of-control if it injures someone or causes concern to someone that it might injure them.

The courts may also decide that a dog is dangerously out-of-control if it injures someone else’s animal, or the owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they try to stop a dog attacking their animal.

Farmers are legally allowed to shoot a dog which is worrying farm animals or attacking a herd or flock.
