Wigan Council reminds local businesses of food allergy regulations (3 May 2016)

Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Wigan Council reminds local businesses of food allergy regulations

Wigan Council has reminded local businesses of the changes to rules around allergen information and what they must be able to provide to customers with food allergies.

New rules on providing allergy information to customers went live in December 2014, meaning all food businesses have to verbally explain or signpost to where allergen information can be found.

The change in the rules mean that all food businesses need to inform customers when any of the 14 specific allergenic ingredients – including peanuts, egg and milk – are present in the food they make or serve.

In an online poll by Allergy UK, 52% of consumers surveyed said they felt more confident when asking for this information since the new laws were introduced, but many still experience negative attitudes when eating out.

The survey reported that some felt that a handful of businesses did not know what allergies are or do not take them seriously.

The primary cause of food allergy deaths in the UK is due to allergic reactions caused when food is prepared and consumed outside the home, where allergenic ingredients have been used and not declared.

Director of economy and environment at Wigan Council, Karl Battersby, said:

“We have been working with businesses across Wigan Borough since the introduction of the new allergen labelling rules.

“Providing accurate food allergen information is potentially life-saving. Since 2014, we have seen an increase in allergen information being provided to consumers in the borough – but there is more work to be done and more improvements businesses can make.

“Our officers can support any business which needs some guidance and we’d ask them to get in touch.”
