A gun amnesty in London by the Metropolitan Police resulted in a full-scale alert after a WWII bomb was handed in at Sutton Police Station.

The Evening Standard reports that the 1940s mortar shell and ammunition were dealt with by bomb squad officers who were called to Sutton Police Station after 2pm on Monday.

The owner of the mortar had seen the publicity about the gun amnesty in the capital – which started on Monday and continues until 23 November – and decided to hand it in.

Roads in Sutton were closed off to the public while the device was checked, but the all-clear was given after half-an-hour.

The gun amnesty is the first to be held for six years and aims to encourage people to hand in unlicensed firearms to prevent them from falling into the hands of gangs.

Police say the prime target for the gun amnesty is old WW1 revolvers and handguns, which can be restored and used in crime. Because of their age, many are untraceable.

London is currently on high alert from a terrorist attack, say police, making recovering unlicensed weapons crucial to keeping the capital safe.

However, video footage has emerged online of a gang of youths on an East London estate aiming a volley of fireworks at a passing police car.

The incident happened on 2 November and around 15 hooded youths on bicycles were involved – they are seen lighting rockets and aiming them at a police patrol car on Bruce Road in Bow. The incident was captured on CCTV.

Residents called police after the youths blocked the road and set a bin alight.

Following the incident, Foyzer Rahman, 24, was charged with arson, possession of cannabis, causing danger to road users and destroying property with intent to endanger life. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.
