US researchers at Stanford University in California have developed a pill which they hope may replace biopsies in cancer diagnosis.

The pill would detect proteins in the blood released as a result of the pill when cancer is present – a blood test would replace tissue biopsies if trials of the pill are successful. It is hoped the technology would work for very early-stage cancer diagnosis, as well as later-stage cancers.

Stanford researchers John Ronald and Sanjiv Gambhir developed the technique, which uses circular pieces of DNA – called minicircles – which cause cancer cells to secrete a specific protein in the blood.

All cells contain DNA, which contains the cell’s genetic code – and instructions telling a cell what type of cell it is (eg a skin cell) and how to reproduce.

Cancers develop when the instructions in DNA are changed – sometimes as a result of genetic factors or external factors such as pollutants, exposure to chemicals or smoking.

The new cancer diagnosis technique involving a diagnostic cancer pill was first revealed at a conference in 2013. Early diagnosis of cancer can greatly improve the outcome for a patient.

The findings of the latest stage of the research are published in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
