An uncle and his nephew have appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on charges of planning to kill US military personnel based in the UK, BBC News reports.

Junead Ahmed Khan, 24, of Marlow Avenue in Luton, is accused of plotting to run a US serviceman down in a vehicle – possibly from a US air base in East Anglia – and then kill him with a knife between 10 May 2015 and 14 July 2015.

Khan and his uncle Shazib Ahmed Khan, 22, also of Marlow Avenue in Luton, also face a charge of attempting to join Islamic State in Syria – and being involved in preparation with the intention to commit acts of terrorism, between 1 August 2014 and 10 May 2015.

Both men were remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey on 10 August.

Westminster Magistrates Court heard that Khan – a delivery driver for TRG Logistics in Luton – planned to stage a car accident and then kill a US serviceman using a knife in an attack similar to the one which led up to the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby outside Woolwich Barracks in southwest London two years ago.
Both men were arrested last week by officers from the counter-terrorism network – and have been held at Southwark Police Station since then.
Officers also arrested a man in his 30s, who was released without charge on Monday (20/07/15) night.
