Tesco has launched an investigation into why a bottle of red wine bought in one of its stores caused a mother to break out in red welts across her face after drinking it.

The Daily Mail reports that accountant Justine Jones, 44, from Shropshire drank the wine with her mother and daughter to celebrate her daughter’s eighteenth birthday.

Mrs Jones’ mother Jan had bought the bottle of Tesco Finest Garnacha wine – on opening the bottle, they found it was a clear liquid and smelt strongly of bleach.

Ms Jones – a mother of two children – said:

“It tasted foul. I inspected the bottle and found that the liquid was clear and had bits of mucus and bits floating in it.

”My daughters and mum smelt the liquid and thought it had a faint smell of bleach. We were horrified.”

Ms Jones suffers from the condition pemphigus – her immune system is hypersensitive to some chemicals, with the result that she is left with severe blistering of the skin when she comes into contact with them.

The day after drinking the wine, Ms Jones says her skin was covered in huge painful sores and she was admitted to hospital.

Her mother took the bottle back to the Tesco branch she bought it from in Market Weighton, East Yorkshire and demanded that the store investigate.

The family received a letter from Tesco informing them a report had been sent to their technologist and that the Spanish wine had been provided by a supplier.

The letter advised them:

“The technologist acts as a regulator and will follow it up with the people who make this product for us, as well as keeping an eye on all incoming complaints.”

The family also received a voucher for around £10-£15 – but Ms Jones said Tesco’s response was not good enough and the family wanted an explanation, as it appeared the bottle had been tampered with.

She added that she suspects the liquid in the wine bottle was cleaning fluid.

A spokesperson for Tesco said:

“We're sorry we let Mrs Jones down with our investigation.

“We take all complaints extremely seriously – our team will be looking at what went wrong to ensure it doesn't happen again.”
