Police in Brixton, south London had to use CS spray to control protesters campaigning against the gentrification of the borough and spiralling rents and property prices.

The protest started peacefully with protesters carrying banners which read “social housing, not social cleansing”.

However, The Guardian reports that the protest on Saturday (25/04/15) ended in violence, with the Town Hall invaded by protesters and one window of local estate agent Foxtons smashed.

Although the organisers of the Reclaim Brixton rally had warned the 1,000 protesters who attended that they did not want any trouble, at around 3.15pm, protesters made their way into Lambeth Town Hall, where police confronted them. No damage was caused to the Town Hall and police did not arrest any of the protesters.

However, Foxtons estate agent became the focus of the protesters, who smashed one window. The words “Yuppies Out” were daubed on the windows which remained intact. Foxtons has become a focus of attention for protesters against Brixton’s gentrification. Police arrested one protester at the scene.

At around 4.10pm, protesters entered Brixton Police Station and police say they were dispersed after CS gas was deployed.

It is reported that further acts of vandalism took place throughout Brixton on Saturday night and police maintained a strong presence in the area.
