Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Modern Slavery Bill comes into force

The Modern Slavery Bill comes into force today (31/07/15) – and increases the maximum custodial sentence for those convicted of people trafficking and modern slavery offences from 14 years to life imprisonment.

The law applies to England and Wales – and courts will be able to restrict the activities of those suspected of people trafficking.

The Bill also offers protection to victims of modern slavery or trafficking, who may have been forced to carry out criminal activities under duress.

Victims of modern slavery will also be able to apply for civil Legal Aid.

The Bill received Royal Assent in March – the Home Office estimates that between 10,000 and 13,000 people are victims of modern day slavery in the UK. Many will have been brought to the UK on the promise of earning money and receiving an education, while being forced to work for low pay or no pay, or as workers in domestic service, agriculture and construction or the sex industry.

The government has strengthened border patrols at UK ports and major airports to detect victims of trafficking as they arrive in the UK – and before they are trafficked to other countries or disappear into the black economy.

The College of Policing has published new guidance for police officers investigating human trafficking and modern slavery offences, with safeguarding and supporting victims a priority.
