The London Ambulance Service (LAS) is to set up its own training academy to encourage more people from the UK to consider a career as a paramedic.

The Evening Standard reports that shortages in the number of paramedics in the service means the LAS will have to visit Australia in another recruitment drive.

A further 200 paramedics will be recruited when LAS recruiters visit Australia in September.

There are also plans to offer London-based paramedics the chance of a career break in Australia.

There are currently 400 frontline vacancies for paramedics in London – and as a result, target response times to emergency callouts are being missed.

The target for the most serious “red” coded callouts for the LAS is 75% – in June, just 66.5% of the most serious emergency callouts were reached in the target time of eight minutes.

The new paramedic academy will be run at existing education centres – the first 12 paramedic students will be enrolled in January 2016 and the LAS hopes to train 50 new “home-grown” paramedics next year.

Junior paramedics are paid a salary of up to £18,387 during training on the job.
