UK immigrants have made a substantial contribution to the fiscal system during the last decade according to new research by the University College London.

According to the study, immigrants arriving since the turn of the Millennium have contributed substantially more than they have received in benefits and have had a positive impact on education services and reduced the financial burden on UK born workers.

“Our research shows that in contrast with most other European countries, the UK attracts highly educated and skilled immigrants from within the EEA as well as from outside,” Co-author of the study and CReAM director, Professor Christian Dustmann revealed.

The research also revealed that EEA immigrants are more likely than UK natives to hold high-level qualifications such as a university degree and are less likely to live in social housing. This lead to the authors surmising that immigration contribution had been amazingly strong since 2000, as opposed to draining.

A separate UCL study released late last week also warned the government against its attempts to cut net migration to the UK, as it is “neither a useful tool nor a measure of policy effectiveness.” The report also argues that the UK's reputation as a leading place to study and work has been damaged by the measures that aim to reduce student, family and other work-related migration.
