Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Home Secretary launches inquiry into deaths in police custody

Home Secretary Theresa May has set up an inquiry into why deaths in police custody have reached a five-year high.

The Daily Mail reports that in the year 2014-2015, a total of 17 people died shortly after being detained in police custody in England and Wales – and a further 69 died by taking their own lives within 48 hours of being taken into police custody.

The figures are 50% higher than five years ago, says the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Mrs May announced an independent review into deaths in police custody as the annual report was published.

In a keynote speech in Brixton, south London, the Home Secretary said that each death represented a failure that could “dramatically” undermine the “unwritten contract” between the public and the police – which could harm community relations.

Mrs May also said she would make it easier for bereaved families “to get answers” following the death of a loved one in police custody.

”Sadly, as these figures show, deaths and serious incidents in custody may be rare, but they do happen,” said Mrs May.

“And when they do, for the families involved who have lost loved ones, all too often the system doesn't work the way you would expect.”

The inquiry will examine how police complaints about serious incidents and deaths in custody are handled, how official investigations are run – and the support available for families after an incident.
