Grandfather awarded £1.5m compensation after losing leg (8 November 2013)

A grandfather from Bradford has been awarded £1.5 million in compensation after filing a personal injury and medical negligence claim against the NHS following a series of botched operations.
Jon Halliday had his left leg amputated earlier this year after doctors failed to identify the correct course of treatment for a serious leg infection. A series of poor decisions failed to combat the disease and he eventually had to have the limb removed.
The 59-year-old admitted the incident left him feeling as if he had been abandoned by the health service. He is now confined to a wheelchair and is unable to undertake simple daily tasks. He has also been informed that his life expectancy is likely to be dramatically reduced due to the condition spreading throughout his body.
Mr Halliday said: “It's unbelievable, it really is. I'm in a wheelchair. I have carers in every day and they have to do most things for me. I'm not able to work – and can make a cup of tea and a sandwich and that's about the limit nowadays.”
Bradford Royal Infirmary admitted liability over the failure to diagnose him correctly and to treat the initial stages of septic arthritis, which could have prevented any amputation procedures. Now unable to work, Mr Halliday has moved closer to his family as he attempts to recover from additional spinal injuries.
