A man has been taken to hospital after a building collapsed in central London on Monday (20/04/15) afternoon.

BBC News reports that the building was under scaffolding and was due for demolition when the top floors collapsed and brought the rest of the building down.

The building in Portugal Street in Holborn collapsed at around 16:15 BST and 200 people had to be evacuated from nearby buildings.

A 56-year-old man was taken to hospital with head injuries and injuries to his hip.

Hazard response teams and London Fire Brigade (LFB) with a team of around 30 firefighters attended the scene.

Station Manager John Snelgrove – a witness at the scene – said:

"When the first crews arrived, they found the building – which was under refurbishment – had collapsed between the fifth and second floors.”

Another witness to the building collapse, Murat Akkulak – a research co-ordinator at the Royal College of Surgeons – added:

“There was a lot of dust, but I could see there was a digger down amongst the rubble and one or two builders were running around trying to get someone out of the digger.
“The operator seemed to be trapped in the digger.
“When I checked the photos I had taken, I saw there were two people standing on the upper layer looking down.
“They seem to have had a really lucky escape to me, because everything else had just collapsed around them.”

Mr Akkulak said the building was being demolished “layer by layer”.

The incident has been reported to the Health and Safety Executive.
