A total of 13 arrests have been made in a joint operation between the Metropolitan Police, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Redbridge Council’s benefit fraud investigation team.

The Ilford Recorder reports that the £1.124 million suspected organised fraud centred on Bangladeshi nationals living in Italy, who were travelling to east London to claim Housing Benefit they were not entitled to.

It is alleged the individuals arrested made false declarations about employment as part of the claims process.

To claim Housing Benefit, European Economic Area nationals must genuinely be in employment in the UK.

An investigation was launched when benefit assessment officers noticed an increase in claims from Italian residents, who were all earning around £156 each week.

The investigation lasted for one year – and investigators say that it is possible that this type of alleged fraud might be taking place across other London boroughs, including Tower Hamlets and Newham, as well as other parts of the country.

Investigating officers have established that the details of declared employers submitted on claims applications by the gang might not be legitimately trading – and therefore the employment could not be genuine.
