A terrified bull which escaped from an abattoir has been shot by a farmer in East Lancashire, over fears it might attack a member of the public.

The Lancashire Telegraph reports that the animal was due for slaughter on Thursday (02/10/14) but escaped and was spotted rampaging round a field near a public house on the A59.

After police were called, a local farmer who has a firearms licence was called to shoot the bull before it reached the Spread Eagle public House at Sawley and attacked.

The pub took patrons sitting outside the pub inside for safety while the bull was on the loose.

Inspector Phil Hutchinson said:

“We received reports shortly after 1.30pm that the bull was extremely irate and very angry.

“We dispatched officers to the scene and put up the helicopter to help contain the bull.”

The farmer called to the scene managed to shoot the bull dead before it reached the pub’s playground.

Animals facing slaughter can often react violently out of fear once they reach the abattoir because of the smell and noise on site.

Any animal suspected of having escaped from an abattoir should be avoided in case it attacks – the police should be notified in the first instance of any farm animal on the rampage or which has escaped onto the public highway, railway lines or is roaming without supervision.
