Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, £1,000 penalty for selling alcohol to 16-year-old

Waltham Forest Council in east London has prosecuted a shop owner who sold alcohol to a customer who was underage.

Tarik Korkmaz, 29, owns Best Supermarket on the Chingford Road. He pleaded guilty at Thames Magistrates’ Court, after an undercover operation by Trading Standards found him selling alcohol to a customer below the legal age.

Korkmaz was ordered to pay £436 in fines, £664 in court costs and a £43 victim surcharge.

The court heard that, on 29 September 2016, as part of an exercise to deter the sale of alcohol and anti-social behaviour within the borough, Trading Standards Enforcement Officers – accompanied by the police and two minors aged 15 and 16 – went to a number of alcohol retail premises to carry out test purchases.

At Best Supermarket, the 16-year-old was sold a bottle of WKD Original Blue.

Korkmaz was subsequently interviewed and prosecuted by Trading Standards for the sale of alcohol to a person under the age of 18.

Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Clyde Loakes, said:

“This shopkeeper was caught red-handed selling alcohol to a minor – and has paid a hefty price.

“The message is quite clear – we will not tolerate underage sales of drink or cigarettes.

“If shop worker or manager is unsure of a customer’s age, they need to ask for ID or not sell the item – they risk fines and even losing their licence.”
