Woman Killed In Northampton Nightclub Crush (20 October 2011)

A young woman has been killed and at least eight other people injured in a nightclub crush in Northampton. Twenty-two-year-old Nabila Nanfuka of north-west London was killed in Lava and Ignite nightclub on Peter's Street in the early hours of October the 19th. Witness, James Adetula, claimed that a “stampede” had broken out as clubbers made their way towards the venue’s exits when they were informed that their buses were departing. The number of people in the club at the time of the incident is unknown and is currently subject to investigation. Superintendent Andy Cox, of Northamptonshire Police, claimed that they were aware of large numbers gathering at the 1,600-capacity venue. Officers are currently looking into claims that the club's fire alarm may have been activated prior to the crush.
Miss Nanfuka, a leisure and tourism student at the University of Northampton, is believed to have died shortly after arriving in hospital. Two other people are in intensive care following the crush. Six clubbers were treated for minor injuries and several people were treated by medics at the scene.
Mr. Adetula, a friend of Miss Nanfuka, told of how clubbers surged towards the club’s exists following an announcement signalling that the club was closing for the night. Mr. Adetula said that the fire alarm then went off and everyone inside of the club started panicking. Councillor David Palethorpe, of Northampton Borough Council, has sent his deepest sympathies to the families of all those involved.
