Welsh Government Campaign Tackles Domestic Abuse in Relationships (14 September 2011)

A campaign to tackle domestic abuse and sexual violence in relationships is to be launched at Cardiff Queen’s Arcade shopping centre. The Live Fear Free campaign is focused on challenging attitudes towards domestic abuse and is supported by a video about sexual violence.
The campaign forms a part of the Welsh Government’s Right to Be Safe agenda. Consisting of two videos designed to be hosted on the campaign's official website, the first video will focus on sexual violence against women and the second will look into the effects of domestic abuse on young children. The videos will include information on where and how to seek help.
At the launch event for the campaign, visitors to the Cardiff Queen’s Arcade shopping centre will witness the story of violence in the home. T-shirts hung from washing lines will bear the images and comments of survivors of domestic abuse in Wales.
Figures reveal that almost 100 women and 21 men a year are murdered by their partners or ex-partners in England and Wales. According to Welsh Women’s Aid, one in three women are subject to sexual violence while one in four women suffer from domestic abuse.
Paula Hardy, Welsh Women's Aid chief executive officer, has welcomed the campaign’s direct approach. Ms. Hardy claims that in the majority of rape cases, the victim will know their rapist. The organisation is aware that attitudinal change is not instantaneous and is committed to continuing to challenge existing attitudes in order to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
