Teenage Walker Hospitalised Following Guided Walk in Wales (27 October 2011)

A teenager was hospitalised with suspected spinal injuries after a fall in the Brecon Beacons. A helicopter from Chivenor in Devon was sent to the scene of the incident to rescue the teen. Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) claimed that the incident was the second involving guided gorge walkers in the area in three days. The teenager is believed to have injured himself after jumping from the side of a waterfall into a plunge pool. This activity is believed to have been part of the guided gorge walk.
The RAF arrived at the scene, where they winched a paramedic to the ground to access the boy. The Central Beacons and Brecon mountain rescue teams followed arrived shortly after. The teen was strapped to a stretcher and carried over dangerous rocky terrain before being winched up to safety. The teenager was transported to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.
Mark Moran of the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team has thanked the RAF for their involvement. Mr. Moran told of how the RAF helicopter was “absolutely invaluable” in situations such as these and “saves team members hours of strenuous stretcher carrying”. Mr. Moran said that the use of the RAF helicopter was “far safer” for the casualty and that injured parties were able to reach professional medical care within minutes of extraction from the site of an incident.
