Strict ASBOs for teenage gang members (26 February 2014)

A teenage gang from Liverpool that engaged in intimidating and threatening behaviour and committed numerous crimes in the city has each been given an Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) in an attempt to curb its behaviour.
The eight teenagers, aged between 15 and 19, carried out a “campaign of terror” in the Birkenhead area, which led to a catalogue of almost 200 complaints to the local council last year. Wirral Magistrates Court heard that the youths were privy to “criminal damage, arson, drug misuse, graffiti, theft and racial abuse.”
James and Jack Hutchinson, Danny Bellis, Jake Sysum, Darren Carter, Luke Anthony and his sisters, Amanda and Chloe Lees, have all now been handed ASBOs that will run for two years after their solicitors offered no objections.
The teenagers, who consistently abused local community members and even rigged a tripwire that caused an elderly man to fall outside a shop, will now be unable to frequent several areas in Birkenhead. In addition, they will not be able to associate with each other or a group of other named gang members in Liverpool unless there are exceptional circumstances involved.
Judge Michael Ableson told them that their behaviour had been “disgraceful and shameful” and that six-month prison sentences would be the next punishment if any of them “stepped out of line.”
