Selby District Council to pilot government’s brownfield register (11 July 2016)

Date: 11/07/2016
Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Selby District Council to pilot government’s brownfield register

Selby District Council in North Yorkshire has been chosen to pilot the government's brownfield land register, which provides housebuilders with up-to-date and publicly available information on all brownfield sites available for development in the area.

Brownfield is land that has been previously developed, which is or was occupied by a permanent structure or structures.

The register helps housebuilders identify suitable sites quickly, speeding up the construction of new homes.

It also allows communities to draw attention to local sites for listing – including derelict buildings and “eyesores” that are suitable for redevelopment and that could attract investment to the area.

Sites that are listed as part of the register are still subject to the usual planning conditions and an application will need to be submitted for consideration.

Selby Council’s Head of Strategic Planning, Policy and Economic Development, James Cokeham, said:

“This is a vital piece of work which will help us deliver our Local Plan and identify development sites, meeting Selby’s housing need, while protecting our green spaces.”
