Police have confirmed that a second man has been arrested during an investigation into how one man died when 35 Afghan Sikhs were transported to the UK inside a shipping container.

BBC News reports that 34 migrants – including 15 children – were discovered in freezing and airless conditions inside the shipping container when it arrived at Tilbury Docks on Saturday (16/08/14) afternoon.

The traumatised migrants were discovered after banging on the sides of the container for help. It is reported that some of the migrants already have relatives in Essex and most are in the process of claiming asylum in the UK.

The man who died has been named as Meet Singh Kapoor, who was 40. The results of a post-mortem are inconclusive.

Police in Northern Ireland arrested a 34-year-old man on Tuesday at Banbridge in County Down and he is due to arrive in the UK to be questioned by police.

A second man has now been arrested in connection with the investigation into the death of Mr Kapoor and facilitating illegal entry into the UK – the 33-year-old from Londonderry in Northern Ireland was arrested after he voluntarily attended a police station in Essex.

Those found responsible for transporting the Afghan migrants to the UK illegally might face charges of manslaughter over Mr Kapoor’s death.
