Runaway Bus Kills British Holidaymaker in Canada (19 October 2011)

An elderly holidaymaker has been killed after being hit by a runaway bus in Canada. Seventy-four-year-old Jean Shepperdley was walking along an Ontario street when she was hit by the bus. She was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto with serious injuries yet died a few days later, Ontario Provincial Police have reported. Constable Peter Leon claimed that the chartered school bus was doing its usual school run, picking up passengers at the Port Carling Locks. While the driver was boarding, the bus set itself in motion and the driver was unable to fully board the bus before it rolled backwards towards the Indian River. The bus eventually came to a stop against a large stone wall. One of the passengers managed to take the driver’s seat and secure the bus.
Mrs. Shepperdley, a retired district nurse from Hampshire, is believed to have travelled to Canada with her husband Bob to attend her brother-in-law’s surprise 70th birthday party. Mrs. Shepperdley’s friends and relatives have told of their shock at her death. Former colleague, Joyce Willett, said that she would miss Mrs. Shepperdley dreadfully, describing the incident as a “terrible shock”. Miss Willett claimed that she was “looking forward” to Mrs. Shepperdley’s homecoming and said that she had suffered “a huge loss”. Police are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
