Rioters’ sentences are too harsh and their cases should be treated just like any other, according to the Crown Prosecution Service chief. Keir Starmer, the Director of Public Prosecutions is concerned that the rioters are being regarded as a 'separate category' and are hence being dealt with differently. Recent surveys suggest that rioters’ sentences are around one-quarter longer than usual.

Examples of the harsh sentencing include a 17-year-old girl was recently jailed for eight months for stealing a bottle of Lucozade and some sweets from a Poundland store and a Territorial Army soldier who received a 13-month jail sentence for stealing a television from an Argos store.

A 30-year-old lifeguard who joined looters ransacking a phone shop during the civil unrest also received a 13-month jail sentence and a doctor's daughter who stole a bottle of Lucozade, some T-shirts and a pair of sunglasses was reportedly jailed for eight months.

Prime Minister David Cameron, in contrast to Mr Starmer, has hailed the harsh sentences that the courts have been handing out. Mr Cameron vows to step up his campaign to fix Britain's “broken society” and calls for greater discipline in schools and stringent measures to abolish welfare dependency. Mr Cameron claims that a “misinterpretation' of human rights laws had led to people undermining the idea of accountability” yet the CPS chief does not believe that human rights are among the causes.
