Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Rhondda Cynon Taf May Introduce Public Drinking Ban

Rhondda Cynon Taf may impose restrictions on drinking alcohol in public places in order to tackle antisocial behaviour. Under the proposed restrictions, drinking alcohol in public places would not be made illegal. However, anyone who refused to abide by a police request to cease drinking alcohol in a public place could be faced with a criminal charge. Countywide restrictions on drinking alcohol in public places have already been imposed in Cardiff and Wrexham.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is considering the move following the successfully introduction of the Designated Public Place Orders (DPPOs) in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd, and Penrhiwceiber in the Cynon Valley. The order in Penrhiwceiber reportedly led to a 39 per cent reduction in the number of alcohol-related incidents reported to police in a year. While such orders have been imposed in several areas in Wales, they are usually only targeted at specifically designated areas. Issued under the Police and Criminal Justice Act 2001, DPPOs provide the police with the power they require to prevent an individual or a group of individuals from consuming alcohol in a public place. The order also allows for the confiscation of alcohol. Anyone who fails to comply may face prosecution and a fine of a maximum of £500. Russell Roberts, Rhondda Cynon Taf’s council leader, claimed that the council wanted to stamp out antisocial behaviour. The proposal has received supported from South Wales Police.
