Reading Borough Council is considering a change to its social housing allocation policy after a 'Let's Talk Housing' consultation in the borough drew a range of responses from residents earlier this year.

The three-part consultation ran from May through November and aimed to identify housing issues that affect locals in Reading and find strategies to improve the situation. Reading Council announced on Thursday that a number of proposed changes that favour residents could come into force by April next year.

The proposals include restricting the housing register to residents that have lived in the town for at least three years, restricting access to the housing register for people that have previously been evicted from a council home and introducing a 12-month ban for those that have refused three properties over a six-month period. It may also rename the 'Band F' category to 'no priority'.

“I believe we should prioritise the people who live, work or have family here in Reading and that tenants who have been evicted for anti-social behaviour should not be able to get straight back on the housing register,” Lead councillor for housing, Richard Davies added.

Local housing authorities are now able to adopt a more flexible approach to how they run their respective housing registers after recent changes to the law.
