Police Reassure Community Following Child Abduction Fears (9 September 2011)

Police are reassuring Glasgow’s east end community following a spate of child abduction rumours. The rumours are a result of reports that two men in a silver car have allegedly been approaching young children in the area. The police are currently investigating reports of three separate yet similar incidents. One of the men is thought to have shown a child a puppet, according to police. Police have being reassuring parents that the rumours, which have been extensively discussed on a range of social networking sites, are untrue.
Strathclyde Police claim there has been no suggestion of attempts to abduct children from the area. However, officers are currently investigating the reports. Police are contacting local schools to ensure that staff remind children of the dangers of talking to strangers. Police in East Kilbride recently confirmed that they too are investigating reports of people acting "suspiciously" around children.
A week earlier, police in Cumbernauld and in Fife released a statement regarding the circulation of fictitious reports relating to child abductions in the area. In Fife, police have been investigating one incident involving a 15-year-old girl who was approached by the male driver of a silver car.
