The husband of a woman who committed suicide by stepping out in front of a train claims that the NHS failed to provide her with appropriate care. Joanne Bingley suffered from postnatal depression after the birth of her daughter. Mrs. Bingley’s husband, Chris Bingley, claimed that there had been "horrendous failings" in the care that she had received. Mrs. Bingley, 39, from Huddersfield, committed suicide in April last year, ten weeks following giving birth. Mr. Bingley claimed that his wife was "badly let down” by the NHS.

At an inquest into her death, coroner Professor Paul Marks concluded that Mrs. Bingley took her own life while experiencing severe postnatal depression. Earlier, the inquest was informed that the couple were “overjoyed” upon learning that Mrs. Bingley was pregnant following previously suffering from a miscarriage and fertility problems. Following the birth of her daughter in February 2010, Mrs. Bingley struggled to breastfeed her daughter, resulting in the dramatic weight loss of her baby. Mr. Bingley told the inquest that following the birth, Mrs. Bingley became anxious and considered herself an inadequate mother. Mr. Bingley told of how Mrs. Bingley often claimed that she would be “better off dead”. The NHS failed to hospitalize Mrs. Bingley for treatment, despite the pleas of her husband.
