The Metropolitan Police are investigating the deaths of two babies at St Thomas’ Hospital in London in June – and are liasing with Cambridgeshire police over the death of a third baby in similar circumstances.

BBC News reports that the deaths are being linked to contaminated feeding drips, but police have confirmed that NHS staff are not part of the criminal investigation.

The Met police launched their investigation on Thursday (11/11/14), after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). In London, the two babies died on 1 June and 10 June and their families have been informed of the investigation.

In Cambridge, a third baby died later in June at the Rosie Maternity Hospital.

Public Health England launched confirmed in June that 22 babies were being treated for illness linked to contaminated Intravenous (IV) feeds. The babies had been infected with Bacillus cereus bacterium, which causes septicaemia. Babies unable to feed are fed intravenously, with food pumped into the vein using a line from a drip. As a result, contaminated feeds could result in septicaemia – blood poisoning.

It is reported that many of the babies affected were premature. Symptoms of infection with Bacillus cereum bacterium would include sickness and diarrhoea – which, in an infant or vulnerable patient, could lead to severe dehydration.
