Labour Slams Government’s “Disastrous” Student Visa Policy (9 September 2011)

Labour has branded the Government's student immigration policy as “disastrous”, claiming that it will put the reputation of the UK's top universities at risk. Ministers are depending on the policy to reduce the amount of student visas issued per year. The House of Lords shadow Home Office minister Lord Hunt of Kings Heath claims that the changes would cost £2.4 billion per year.
Lord Hurt describes the Government's plans as "flawed” and considers them to be “poorly executed with inadequate information to Parliament”. Lord Hunt claims that the policy will cause considerable harm to the UK’s economy and educational institutions. He highlights the number of UK universities in commendable positions on a list of the world's top 100 academic institutions. Lord Hunt claims that “thousands upon thousands” of young adults come to the UK to take advantage of its educational establishments and that many leave the country retaining the links they have made. He states that he is unable to understand the reasons why the Government has failed to recognise the potential harm that it will cause to the country’s educational establishments.
Earl Attlee, speaking on behalf of the Home Office, told peers that the policy strikes a balance by continuing to support British educational institutions and the reducing migration to manageable levels. Earl Attlee maintains that the policy will cut out abuse of student visas.
