Haringey Council takes action over nuisance neighbour (29 July 2016)

Haringey Council in north London has taken legal action against a nuisance neighbour who kept a farmyard cockerel in their back garden, which kept residents awake at night when it crowed.
Neighbours of Magdalane Sylvester – of Effingham Road in Haringey – had complained for 18 months about being kept awake by the bird, despite efforts by the council to resolve the problem.
A noise abatement order was served in December 2015 ordering Ms Sylvester to reduce the noise or face prosecution.
However, she did not make any attempts to ensure other residents were not disturbed and the council took action.
At Tottenham Magistrates’ Court in her absence, Sylvester was fined £220, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £22 and costs of £355.
After the hearing, Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Environment Councillor Peray Ahmet said:
“Noise can make people’s lives a misery and I’m pleased we have taken tough action in the case of the crowing cockerel.
“We’ll do everything within our power to make sure our residents are can enjoy peace and quiet in their own homes.”
