Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Croydon council plans new five-year social housing policy

Housing applicants new to the area in Croydon and other London boroughs could have to wait five years before they are eligible for social housing under new proposals set out by Tory councils, which would come into effect if they were re-elected in the spring.

Social housing in certain areas in the capital is currently allocated on specific criteria including the need for a property and the amount of time on the waiting list. However, officials for Croydon council have revealed that demand for housing now outstrips supply significantly, in some instances by as much as six times over.

Council leader Mike Fisher spoke about the issue at a public meeting late last week. He said: “What we want to start consulting on is around a five-year residency rule, so you will have to have lived in the area or had strong local links to the area for around five years. That will go a long way to making sure the homes we have are for local families.”

The Tory politician went on to say the policy was not yet finalised but the council would start consulting on it later this year if the party wins the general election in May. Greenwich council is currently one of the few councils in the UK to employ a five-year residency rule, which it put in place two years ago.
