Commission to Investigate Improvement within Scottish Education System (1 December 2011)

A commission has been ordered to look into the Scottish education system amid claims that the education system is falling behind that of other countries across the globe. Keir Bloomer, an architect of the Curriculum for Excellence, is leading the Commission on School Reform that has been designed to conduct an inquiry into the way in which the Scottish education system can be improved. Mr. Bloomer claimed that while the Scottish education displayed much strength, there was a requirement to speed up improvements.
The commission, which has been established by both Reform Scotland and the Centre for Scottish Public Policy, comprises political party representatives, school head teachers and college principals. Mr. Bloomer has claimed that the Scottish education system’s progress against educational systems across the globe has been hindered by the education system’s withdrawal from two large international surveys designed to measure pupils’ performance. The commission intends to conduct its own research and is set to offer clear, constructive suggestions with a view to moving forward.
Mr. Bloomer claimed that the remit of the commission was wide, stating that there was no aspect of the Scottish education system that they were prevented from considering. The commission is set to begin by investigating whether Scotland’s schools are enabling pupils to fulfil their potential. The commission is scheduled to produce a detailed report of its verdicts and recommendations at the end of 2012.
