A leading children’s doctor who practised at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridgeshire has been given a 22-year jail sentence after being convicted of child abuse against his former patients.

The Daily Mail reports that 41-year-old Myles Bradbury from Herringswell in Suffolk carried out intimate examinations of child patients – some of whom were being treated for leukaemia.

The paediatric consultant haematologist abused a total of 18 children in his care and carried out unnecessarily intimate examinations purely for his own sexual gratification.

The judge at Cambridge Crown Court said Bradbury was the worst paedophile he had ever encountered.

Some of Bradbury’s victims – who were all suffering from blood disorders, including haemophilia – have since died.

The court heard that Bradbury had used a spy pen while examining some of his patients – and had abused boys behind a curtain in his consulting room during examinations and while the child’s parents were in the same room.

Bradbury had pleaded guilty to 25 charges, including sexual assault and charges relating to voyeurism – as well as charges relating to possession of 16,000 indecent images.

Bradbury’s victims had all been aged between ten and 16.

Sitting at Cambridge Crown Court, Judge Gareth Hawkesworth placed Bradbury on the sex offenders’ register for life and also made him subject to a sexual offences prevention order.

“I have never come across a more culpable and grave course of sexual criminality, which has involved such a gross and grotesque breach and betrayal of your Hippocratic Oath and trust reposed in you by your patients, their families and colleagues,” he told Bradbury.

“There are almost too many aggravating features to enumerate in this prolonged, carefully planned, cruel and persistent campaign of abuse.

“At the top of this comes the breach of trust.

“Your colleagues remain guilt-ridden at having been unable to detect your offending earlier – and having been successfully manipulated by you into ignorance.

“Your actions have undermined public trust in an already overstretched health service – and have caused enormous expense and upheaval in the internal inquiries that inevitably followed your suspension from practice.

“All this almost pales into insignificance set against the trauma, fear and distress you have caused to your victims and their families – considerable psychological harm, I have no doubt – which I suspect will linger with them for the rest of their lives.”

London newspaper the Evening Standard reports that as a result of his sentence, Bradbury will never be able to see his baby daughter – born during the police investigation – without supervision.
