Mental health charity Mind has said that many Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are reducing the amount they are spending on mental health services.

Freedom of Information (FoI) data obtained by MP Luciana Berger sets out how much CCGs are spending on mental health.

Responding to publication of the data, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Mind, Vicki Nash, said:

“It’s shameful that so many Clinical Commissioning Groups are reducing their mental health spending year after year.

“We know that budgets are stretched, but it’s vital mental health services get their fair share of funding – particularly if the government is serious about ensuring mental health problems are treated equally as importantly as physical health ones.

“CCGs have been clearly told to invest in mental health – by ignoring these instructions, they are letting down their local communities.

“With a renewed focus on transparency and accountability, we want to see mental health data routinely made available to give us a better understanding of what’s happening on the ground.

“In every local area, one in four people will experience a mental health problem this year – CCGs have a huge role to play in helping ensure everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets the help and support they need, when they need it.

“It’s not just down to the NHS – mental health problems don’t exist in isolation: they impact on and are impacted by many areas of our lives, including work, relationships, housing, education and finances.

“The care and support offered needs to incorporate physical, social and mental health needs.

“The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health called for a more joined up way of working – and the accompanying implementation strategy outlined how NHS and other bodies will work together between now and 2021, to invest the promised £1 billion extra funding to improve mental health services.”
