Britain is set to accept only the “best” immigrants under proposals to reduce the number of immigrants settling into life in the UK, Damian Green, the Immigration Minister, has announced. The new “selective” policy will enable investors, entrepreneurs and the world’s best artists, dancers, academics and musicians to receive preferential treatment. Under the proposed reforms, the Government will allow a reduced number of immigrants to settle into life in the UK. Those who are allowed to remain will be the “brightest” and “best”, with those lacking the skills required to “drive economic growth” being under greater scrutiny.

Mr. Green has told of how the UK needs a system that seeks people who hold the desire to create new jobs and contribute to the economy or add to the country’s already high level of cultural and artistic aspirations. The Conservative MP claimed that immigrants desiring to create a new life in the UK must be able to prove that they will not depend on welfare benefits. Mr. Green added that there was a strong desire to ensure that the UK was attractive to the world’s brightest and best individuals, maintaining that the mass immigration era was over. According to figures released by Mr. Green, 385,000 visas were turned down in the last year alone, with 27,000 forged documents being detected and 1,000 individuals each month stopped for attempting to get on a plane bound for the UK.
