The arrest of four curry house workers from Bangladesh last Saturday (07/12/13) has highlighted recent calls from UK business for more migrant workers to take up jobs British workers do not want.

The four men from Bangladesh were detained by police in a raid on the India Villa curry house situated on Watling Street, Thaxted in Essex.

Police said that three of the men had overstayed their visas while a fourth was working in breach of visa conditions. The men are aged 24, 25, 26 and 36.

The authorities are currently in the process of removing them from the UK. The men have been released on immigration bail and will have to report to the Home Office until they are removed from the UK and returned to Bangladesh.

This week company bosses – Including Sir Stuart Rose of Ocado – have come out in support of more migrant workers being allowed into Britain because of the hours they are prepared to work and the wages they will accept. Sir Stuart was just one leading company boss who said British workers are not filling low-paid service jobs in the restaurant or retail sectors.

Following the police raid on the India Villa curry house, the owner is now likely to be fined £10,000 for each of the workers arrested by police. The government has made it an obligation of business to check on the immigration status of workers in the UK.

Police in Essex also raided two curry houses in Dunmow last week and arrested 13 illegal workers.

The Home Office has said it will target businesses which take on illegal workers in the UK and will impose heavy penalties.
