The Army has confirmed that a number of personal have been seriously injured in a road traffic accident, which happened on Wednesday (17/06/15) during a joint training exercise between the British Army and the Indian military on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire.

The incident occurred on a by-way off Salisbury Plain and involved two troop carriers.

It is reported two Army personal have life-threatening injuries and four or five others have sustained life-changing injuries.

South Western Ambulance Service said that the two Army personnel with life-threatening injuries were flown to Southampton Hospital by Air Ambulance and a further eight seriously-injured casualties were taken to Salisbury District Hospital by ambulance.

An Army spokesman said:

“We can confirm that there has been a road traffic collision in the Salisbury Plain training area, in which it is understood there are a number of casualties.

“The British Army is supporting Wiltshire Police and South West Ambulance Service with their response to the incident which will be duly investigated.”

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said that of the 20 casualties many are “walking wounded” and the majority are Indian Army personnel.

“We received a call from the air ambulance at 6.30pm today, who told us they were attending. First responders and three military ambulances were also at the location.

“We had reports of four to five people with life-changing injuries and approximately 16 others walking wounded.

“The road traffic collision happened on a by-way which cuts through the Plain, hence why we were called.

“It is still regarded as a Wiltshire Police matter as it's on a by-way, although it's off the main road.”
