Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Teaching assistant convicted of child cruelty

A teaching assistant who taped a seven-year-old girl to a chair and subjected her to the ridicule of her classmates has been convicted of cruelty at Bradford Crown Court.

The court was told that 43-year-old Rachael Regan had “bullied and humiliated” the girl – now aged nine – over a period of five months. Regan had stuck sticky notes to the child’s thumbs to prevent her from sucking them, had ripped up a photograph of the girl in her presence – and had shut her in a store cupboard.

In class, Regan had made the girl stand on a chair after tying string gladiator-style round her over-large shoes – and then used sticky tape to bind her to the chair, where she remained for approximately ten minutes in front of laughing classmates.

The court heard that the child had run into her mother’s arms after school, with tears running down her face.

The school – based in Calderdale, West Yorkshire – was visited by police after the incident.

Regan will be sentenced later after reports, but Judge Neil Davey QC said he would not be jailing Regan because of delays in charging her and in bringing the case to court.

The girl’s class teacher, Deborah McDonald, 41, was cleared of charges of child cruelty.
