A family from the UK is taking legal action against a tour operator after they allege they were bitten by insects and fell ill days into a one-week holiday at the five-star Sunwing Waterworld Makadi Hotel in Egypt.

Company director Rae Claydon, 49, and his partner Rachel, 39 – an accountant – were celebrating their anniversary at the resort hotel with Rachel’s five-year-old daughter and Rae’s mother.

After just one night at the hotel – which is situated in Madi Bay in the Red Sea – the family alleges they were covered in insect bites and Rachel was prescribed painkillers, a cortisone injection and antihistamines to combat the effects of what the couple say were bed bug bites.

The Daily Mail reports that Rachel has been left with scars on her legs from the bites.

The family moved rooms at the hotel, but say that the following morning they began to suffer severe symptoms of gastric illness – including diarrhoea, stomach cramps and sickness.

As a result of the symptoms of holiday sickness and diarrhoea, the family could not eat or drink for twenty-four hours and were not able to enjoy the hotel facilities.

The family from Ingatestone in Essex is now taking legal action against tour operator Red Sea Holidays UK, after claiming that their holiday was ruined.

Mr Claydon said:

“We had been looking forward to this well-deserved break for over a year and it very quickly turned into a nightmare.

“It was an awful holiday and the effects of the illness have left us completely shell shocked.”

His partner Rachel said that the family had been looking forward to the holiday for months.

“We wanted a nice break in the sun with our family after working so hard all year and had been looking forward to it for months.

“It was meant to be a celebration of the two years Rae and I have been together, but we have been left feeling let down and very disappointed.

“Visiting the resort doctor and my own GP after coming home was really not what I was expecting when we booked the holiday – and the scars I have been left with from the bites are a constant reminder of the week we spent at the hotel.”
The couple allege that rooms they were offered were dirty – and cutlery and crockery was also dirty.

They also allege that freshly cooked food was mixed with old food – and it appeared as though some meals served to guests had been reheated.

Red Sea Holidays UK has declined to comment because of the pending legal action.
