Ban on unsafe lorries in London (9 February 2015)

Date: 09/02/2015
Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Ban on unsafe lorries in London

The London Mayor and Transport for London have announced that from 1 September this year, lorries without safety measures to protect cyclists will be banned from London’s roads.

Under the Safer Lorries Scheme, lorries in the capital will be expected to have sideguards to prevent cyclists from being dragged beneath lorry wheels in the event of a collision.

Additional safety measures such as Class V and Class VI mirrors could also be required. These give HGV drivers an improved view of cyclists on the road, as well as motorcyclists and pedestrians crossing near lorries.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said:

“We know that a large number of cyclist deaths and serious injuries involve a relatively small number of trucks and lorries that are not fitted with basic safety equipment.

“Such vehicles are not welcome in the capital – and the Safer Lorry Scheme will see them effectively banned from our streets.”

The ban on unsafe lorries in London will be regulated by the Metropolitan Police, the DVLA and the Industrial HGV Taskforce.

HGV drivers who contravene the safety regulations and drive into London could face a fine of up to £1,000.
