Duncan Lewis, Child Care Solicitors, Liverpool City Region launches commission to address child poverty

The Liverpool City Region Child Poverty and Life Chances Commission has launched a new strategy setting out how it will address child poverty issues over the next three years.

The commission was re-launched on 29 January and will be chaired by Frank Field MP, with representatives from local authorities across the Liverpool City Region, as well as input from the police, health sector, private and public sectors, and education and transport sectors, all of which will advise City Region Leaders and the Liverpool Mayor on approaches to tackling child poverty.

Wirral Council says that addressing key priorities will enable the commission to address not only the symptoms, but also the drivers of poverty in the Liverpool City Region.

The commission’s strategy outlines a number of key priorities it will address over the next three years – including how local funding can be best used to ensure disadvantaged children are “school ready”, as well as addressing child hunger, supporting school leavers into training and employment, supporting parents into work to earn an adequate income, addressing health inequalities among children and ensuring children and their families have access to affordable local transport.

Since the commission was established in 2011, it has been instrumental in campaigning for a substantial and sustainable Living Wage, as well as a fairer deal on energy bills for households reliant on a prepayment meter.

The commission has also supported implementing a minimum unit price on cheap alcohol, as well as making local transport more affordable, maximising immunisation rates for all children and combating smoking during pregnancy.

Chair of the Liverpool City Region Child Poverty and Life Chances Commission, Frank Field, MP for Birkenhead, said:

“We are committed to addressing child poverty and ensuring our children receive the very best start in life.

“We know that we can only tackle this issue if we work together across the Liverpool City Region, sharing our resources, knowledge and best practice.

“We have reviewed the commission to ensure it is equipped to achieve these priorities over the next three years.

“Each member of the commission has a lead responsibility for a key objective and will be responsible for its progress and delivery.

“Through our work, we want to ensure that children have the very best start in life – which will ultimately improve their life chances as they develop into adulthood.”
