Thurrock Council in Essex has prosecuted six parents who failed to ensure their children attended school regularly.
The council says that the action involved four prosecutions, which were heard at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 26 February.
In court, one parent attended and admitted the offence – however, the remaining cases were held in the parents’ absence.
A further five cases were withdrawn in court, after the parents involved agreed to engage with Thurrock Council over the matter.
The prosecutions were brought for offences contrary to Section 444(1) of the Education Act 1996.
The court imposed fines totalling £2,420, with total costs of £1,775 and victim surcharges of £103.
In one case, magistrates issued a conditional discharge and did not impose a fine.
