If you have been made homeless, you can apply to your council for accommodation. The legal definition of homelessness is a very broad term. It is not only those who are sleeping on the streets who are considered homeless, you may also be eligible for help from your council if you; • Rely on friends or family for temporary accommodation • Live out of a hostel or night-shelter that is not suitable • Live somewhere that is unsuitable; overcrowded or unhygienic that it might be damaging to your health If you are considered legally homeless then your council may help you. The amount of help you can receive depends on your circumstances. The council should make inquiries where it has reason to believe that a person may be homeless or threatened with homelessness within 56 days.
