Profile / Experience
I am the Director of the Action Against Public Authorities department at Duncan Lewis. I am also a solicitor within the Criminal Defence department. I joined the firm in 2016 and specialise in those areas of work as well as in handling inquests.
My driving force is in holding public authorities to account when they abuse their powers, fail to observe their professional obligations, or otherwise act unlawfully. I have considerable experience in handling misconduct, which might involve allegations against the State of assault, false imprisonment, misfeasance, malicious prosecution, and negligence.
I assist a wide variety of clients, many of whom are vulnerable as a result of their experiences at the hands of the State. I assist in making complaints and bringing civil claims, most often against the police, the prison service, various government departments, and their agencies. I also advise in relation to the mishandling of personal information, discrimination, and breaches of legislation designed to protect basic human rights. I am a careful and strategic litigator who aims to ensure that those I represent remain one step ahead of their opponent.
When a family member dies and an inquest is opened to investigate that death, I represent the bereaved’s interests throughout the proceedings, providing advice and support through what are always traumatic and confusing times. Many years of experience enable me to effectively represent families with sensitivity and compassion, as well as being able to provide a reassuring presence in the strange environment of the courtroom itself. I am a member of INQUEST a national pool of lawyers who are willing and able to provide preparation and legal representation for bereaved families.
In order to maintain a balance between my civil and criminal litigation caseloads, I take care to preserve my duty solicitor status. I regularly attend court and police stations to ensure that anybody who requests my help is properly represented, advised and defended. I am also a member of the Police Actions Lawyers Group (PALG).
My status as a duty solicitor allows me to represent those who the State has charged with a criminal offence. I am able to provide robust defence from the initial police interview, throughout the investigation, and right to the conclusion of the case – whether that is a trial held at the Magistrates’ or at the Crown Court. I have conducted numerous successful trials and have provided advice and representation to high profile individuals throughout my career. I occasionally work with the directors of the crime department where their criminal matters merge into the claims against public authorities area of work.
As a result of this, as a claimant civil litigator I have an unusual and unique insight into the procedures of the investigative and prosecution arms of the government.
