Profile / Experience

I am a Solicitor in the Immigration Department at Duncan Lewis, with an extensive experience of asylum and immigration law.

I regularly appear before the First-Tier and Upper Tribunal of the Immigration Asylum Chamber for oral advocacy, in both asylum appeals and bail hearings. I have prepared, presented and had appeals for nationals of Mongolia, Pakistan, Sudan and Zimbabwe allowed by the First Tier Tribunal.

I am experienced in preparing and lodging Judicial Review claims for asylum and immigration decisions. This includes successfully using the Pre Action Protocol to avoid court litigation whilst obtaining favourable outcomes for clients.

I am accredited under the Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme at Level 2, this means I have demonstrated the required level of knowledge and experience in this area of law as defined by the society. It also enables me to assist both private and publicly funded clients. I am able to prepare initial applications to the Home Office in the United Kingdom and applications for entry clearance overseas. I advise on challenging unfavourable decisions and prepare for appeal hearings.

Prior to joining Duncan Lewis, I worked for several years at a local charity, the Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre, where I gained extensive experience of working with migrant communities and formulated my commitment to immigration casework.

  • "I was instructed to provide an independent social work expert report in an immigration case. The case was very complex and at the outset it seemed like an impossible case. However the task was made much easier as he [Darren] had taken the trouble to work methodically, providing detailed statements and background information, putting together a letter of instruction that was by far the best letter of instruction I had come across in my extensive experience as an expert witness.

"I have had excellent communication with Mr. Middleton, always responding promptly, courteously and professionally. I also noted that the clients involved - although they were feeling powerless due to their circumstances - they however felt empowered by the way Mr. Middleton was dealing with them. In my opinion he left no stones unturned and made maximum use of expert witnesses such as myself, without which the case would have been lost. After all the hard work it was a pleasure to see the case was won.
" - Maswood Ahmed, Independent Social Worker.
